❤️Maximum extent-The Saharas maximum length east to west is ca. 3,700 miles. The Romas called it terra deserta (empty, abandoned land). In the Middle Ages it was known simply as the Great Dessert. The name Sahara came into general use only in the 19th century, Arabs, rather poetically, call it the "waterless sea" (bahr bela ma)
