❤️592-628-Empress Suiko's regency. It is thought that the first shrine on this site was built in 593.
❤️806-The Buddhist monk Kukai climbed Mount Misen, the highest point of the island. ❤️881-First documented evidence of the shrine. ❤️1118-1181- The reign of the warlord Taira no Kiyomari. ❤️1164- He commissioned building of the main Shinto shrine buildings, at the same time donating 33 Buddhist sutra scrolls to the monks on the island. ❤️1207 and 1223-The complex was destroyed by fire. ❤️1325- A typhoon heavily damaged the buildings. ❤️1571-The complex reached its current form. ❤️1874-1875- The great torii was rebuilt. ❤️1996-The shrine was named a World Cultural Monument by UNESCO
