In the Northern Vietnamese Halong Bay Nature has produced one of the most extraordinary Karst landscapes in the world. The Bay's nearly 2,000 small islands form a landscape as magnificent as it is bizarre.

The cliff faces are hollowed out into enormous caves in numerous places, as can be seen here, in this view of a fishing boat from inside the Hang-Trong grotto.
The Vietnamese fishermen are permitted to go about their daily work inside the nature preserve. In compensation, they clean up the "legacy." Over 300 families still live permanently in Halong Bay and make their living by fishing. They live on houseboats and houses set on floating rafts.
