FACTS
❤️World Heritage- The historical sections of Istanbul, including famous buildings such as the Hagia Sofia, Blue Mosque, and Topkapi Palace, were declared World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 1985. ❤️Humble sultan-Even the sultan bowed before entering an Islamic holy building. An iron chain hangs from the ceiling of the western gate ti the courtyard of the Blue Mosque, positioned so as to force the sultan to bow his head as he rides the sacred space, a symbolic act of humility and respect.

❤️ca 658 BCE- Yhe colony of Byzanton was founded by Greeks. ❤️196 CE- The Roman emperor Septimus Severus conquered the city. ❤️324-Emperor Constantine entered the city. He renamed Nova Roma, then on May 11, 440 Constantinople. ❤️395- Constantinople became the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire. ❤️532-Justinian I commissioned the Hagia Sophia completed in 537. ❤️1204-Crusaders plundered the city slaughtering many of its inhabitants. ❤️1453- Ottoman sultan Mehmet II conquered Constantinople after many years of siege ❤️1609-1616-The Sultan Ahmet-Mosque, called the Blue Mosque, was built. ❤️1923- Turkey's capital was moved to Ankara. ❤️1934-1935-Hagia Sophia became a museum.
