• The snow white terraces of Pamukkale formed and are continually resculpted by warm subterranean springs that seep through the surface. Evaporation leaves behind minerals that harden into a chalk like sinter.​
  

• The chalk terraces of Pamukkale glow in the light of the setting sun. The ruins of Hierapolis mark it as the location of one of antiquity's most important baths and spas.

❤️188-50 BCE: Hieropolis was par of the territory controlled by the kings of Pergamon, one of whom, Eumenes II, was said to have built the first baths there in 190 BCE.
❤️133 BCE: Attalos III died, willing the Kingdom of Pergamon to Rome. Hieropolis was part of the Roman province of Asia.
❤️60 CE: Hieropolis was destroyed by an earthquake. 
❤️87: According to legend, the Apostle Philip was crucified here.
❤️193-217: The support of emperors Septimus Severus and Caracalia led to a period of prosperity. 
❤️Ca. 900: Hieropolis is mentioned briefly in a letter Pope Leo and described as the seat of a bishop.
❤️1887: Excavation at the site by German archaeologists began. Since 1957 Italian archaeologists have been in charge.
❤️1988: Pamukkale was named a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.
