❤️188-50 BCE: Hieropolis was par of the territory controlled by the kings of Pergamon, one of whom, Eumenes II, was said to have built the first baths there in 190 BCE.
❤️133 BCE: Attalos III died, willing the Kingdom of Pergamon to Rome. Hieropolis was part of the Roman province of Asia. ❤️60 CE: Hieropolis was destroyed by an earthquake. ❤️87: According to legend, the Apostle Philip was crucified here. ❤️193-217: The support of emperors Septimus Severus and Caracalia led to a period of prosperity. ❤️Ca. 900: Hieropolis is mentioned briefly in a letter Pope Leo and described as the seat of a bishop. ❤️1887: Excavation at the site by German archaeologists began. Since 1957 Italian archaeologists have been in charge. ❤️1988: Pamukkale was named a World Cultural Heritage Site by UNESCO.
